FIS Middle School - A Better Place with the Student Council

By:

Cassandra Flint, David Franzki, Lauren McDowell,

Yoran Otter, Alina Rehorst, and Berend Van der Hoeven

On October 4, 2004, the hallways and rooms of the FIS Middle School were full of campaign posters when whistling, clapping, and laughter filled the air.  It was the day that the president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer of the Student Council was announced.

On the previous Thursday, the 30th of September, the nominated students for the new Student Council held their speeches in the cafeteria. In their speeches every candidate explained how he or she would make the FIS Middle School a better place to be, concluding with these words: "Vote for me!”  The voting took place in the homeroom classrooms on Friday, October 1st. The nominated people were as follows:

President:                    Daniel Rehorst (Grade 8),

Connor DeBruler (Grade 8)

Vice-President:            Simon Radoor-Sorensen (Grade 8),

Hardy Pace (Grade 7)

Treasurer:                    Felix Katzer (Grade 8),

                                    Felicia Lundström (Grade 5)

Secretary:                    Tobias Radoor-Sorensen (Grade 6),

                                    Cassandra Flint (Grade 5)

Unfortunately, however, only one of the two nominated people for each position could be part of the Student Council. Finally the moment which the students had all been waiting for happened.  They got the results of their nominees. The room was silent and everyone was listening. The new Student Council was:

Secretary:                     Tobias Radoor-Sorensen (Grade 6)

Treasurer:                      Felix Katzer (Grade 8)

Vice-President:              Simon Radoor-Sorensen (Grade 8)

President:                     Connor DeBruler (Grade 8)

All the Middle School students wish the Student Council

a lot of success

during the school year 2004-2005.

Rufis

The Franconian International School

finally has a name for its mascot - Rufis.

The name was selected by

Mr Runkel, The PTO, and the FIS Student Council.

Hey People,

My first month of school has gone really well. I have a lot of new friends, and I’m having fun. In 7th grade we are 30 people split up into two classes! That’s not very good because most of my friends are in the other class. School starts at 8:30 and ends at 4:00. I have to take the train into Stockholm which takes about an hour altogether. That is because SIS is located in the middle of Stockholm, and we live outside. I come home very late, and then I have ice hockey training almost every day, so there is not very much time for other things. The level of school is about the same, and we are all at the same level. It is very different though because the school has kindergarten all the way to 12th grade, so it’s very big!!!!  Daniel and I had a lot of fun, and I bet you will get to see all the pictures that he made. I really miss every body and I’m probably coming to Germany winter or spring. We will see!!!!

Hope to hear from you guys soon!!!

Calle

PS: All my friends, I am normally on msn and yahoo at about 17:30!

Mountainous Adventure

The Hike of Our Lives

By Julius Rogenhofer

If you had the chance to forget your daily routines and enter the world of the mountains would you take it?

Last year’s 6th and 7th grade classes were given this opportunity on their class trip. As they stepped off the large, air-conditioned bus and entered a parking lot surrounded by thick, dark green trees, the 7th and 8th graders did not know what to expect. All they had was the mountain guides word that the 2.5 hour hike to the Blaueis Hütte near the top of a fearsome looking mountain was not going to be easy.  When finally all the exhausted kids had reached the camp, no one could resist the warm meal served to them.  After that nearly all students dropped into their beds and slept like they had never slept before.

The next couple of days could be classified as a full time mountain experience. We were awakened early by the first rays of the flashing mountain sun, stepped out into the freezing cold, and started our activity program. These activities included slab-climbing on slippery (if not steep) slabs of rock, abseiling from immense heights, rock climbing on scarily dangerous looking boulders of rock, and having several climbing races. “Climbing down those rocks I felt like an angel moving towards earth!”

Then came the day of the big hike. Those daring enough to join were about to experience the hike of their lives. Unfortunately only three students felt capable for the hike. Maddy Austin, Felix Katzer, and Julius Rogenhofer were all up for the challenge. Guided by Mr. Landman, Mr. Maple, and the mountain guide, they set out to tackle the peak. After an incredible climb, they were all rewarded by a fantastic view and felt closer to heaven as ever before.

This trip has shown us that we as a class can have great fun together, and that even teachers are scared of cold showers and scary heights. And most importantly, we learned that if we all work together and help each other, we can achieve something great!

Our School’s Class Hiking Trip

By Lennart Rogenhofer

Finally, at the end of the school year, we were having our one-week long hiking class trip. We were going to visit Berchdesgarden. We were all very excited, but I can tell you that we were not ready for what was coming. As I got out of the bus, I could not believe my eyes for there was a wonderful site waiting. We (Grades 5 and 6) could see the mountain range from our hotel. On the same day (after it had stopped raining) we already went on our first little hike. It was not very exhausting, but a little warm up exercise for the next few days. We did not know that we would be going on hour-long hikes, go rock climbing, and visit the salt mines. Our second day was a lot harder than the first. We already did one of our hardest hikes. It started off easy, and got harder and harder. We got through all of the hikes and went over to rock climbing.

We were all scared, even though many of us would not admit it. Luckily it was easier than we expected it to be. All you had to do was concentrate, listen, and climb. The climbing part was hardest, because you had to stay stable with three parts (hands and legs counted as parts), and find a good position for the other hand or leg. After a couple of hours, we had to leave the rock climbing site, because some workers came and told us that we had to leave. So instead of going on with our rock climbing, we went on a small hike. This was not as much fun as rock climbing, but it was at least something.  We tried our luck again on the next day and found the climbing station being used. Seeing this, we went into the hilly forest next to it and practiced abseiling for most of the day. Then we went onto a steep part of the station and abseiled there. It was scary, but some of us dared to go. After all this, I thought that it could not become better, but it was going to. We were visiting the salt mines. In the salt mines, there was a lot awaiting us. We found out many interesting facts about the salt mines, and we got to see some really cool things. One of my favourite places was the slides, where we had lots of fun. At the end, I bought myself a souvenir, so that I could always remember this wonderful experience. Then, on the last day, we had our biggest hike. As we started off, I thought that it was only a normal hike, but as the guide and our chaperons (Mr. Thorpe, Ms. Quinn, and Mrs. Akin) explained our way, I found out that it was really going to be a hard trip. I knew that I would manage, but maybe I would have to rest. Well, I was surely going to try my best. We walked past many fields, some (Teletubby) landscapes, and all the time the air got thinner, which made me notice how high we were going. We stopped at a little farm and drank a little before going on. Of course, we also looked at the landscape, and I felt like I was able to see all the beautiful places in the world at once. I hoped that we would reach the top soon, because I was totally exhausted, even though we had just rested. When we reached the top, I could not believe my eyes at the wonderful sight, that we had. It seemed like sitting on a stool, watching the world pass by below you. I hope that our next class trip will be as good as this one.

6th Grade Goals

A New Band Instrument

By: Steven Harrison

This new school I have a new band instrument, and I want to learn how to play it as soon as possible. This year I am playing the clarinet in band, because I always wanted to play the clarinet. I think it sounds cool and is very tempting to play. My uncle plays the clarinet also; maybe he can give me lessons. I am really looking forward to playing the clarinet this year.

A New Year with New Friends

By Lennart Rogenhofer

My biggest goal this year is to be very friendly to the new people coming to our class. This is my goal because it is always hard to be the new one and finding friends. I want to maker this easier. I have already made a new friend in Shawn. He is very nice, and I know that he is going to have many friends. In class I sit next to him, which makes it easier for me to achieve my goal. I hope that I am doing a good job.

BOOKS

By Paul Hansen

Long ago before there was TV, they read books. Now there are lots of different types of books. There were mystery books, BIG BOOKS, small books, thin books, fat books, fiction books, nonfiction books, history books, etc. Books are good for your brain. They help you with spelling, help you so you can read better and faster, and help you read out loud faster and easier. SEE! That is why books are good for you. So read lots of books. That’s my goal for this year.

Math Goal

By Thomas Wallisch

My goal is to get a stage higher in Math.

Math is one of my favorite subjects, so I want to do well at it.

I work hard to make it,

but I never was good enough to get one stage up.

If I keep it up, I might get one up.

Maybe if I only do my homework a bit better I can get it up.

All in all I think I’m pretty good in Math,

but I just want to do better.

My Goal (Responsibility)

By Carmen Schütz

My goal for this year (6th grade) is to get more responsible. In class I want to concentrate more and give more ideas. I want to help the new people (Victoria) and show them things they don’t know yet. I also want to have more fun in school than last year and get faster doing my work. The main thing is that I want to enjoy school more.

My Goal for My School Year

By: Tobias Radoor Sorensen

This year I would like to achieve many things.  I want to be a better team worker, for example in Science, LA, Sports, and many other subjects. By doing this I will probably get better grades in Science, LA, and Sports. I really hope I can do this and get good grades.

My Goal for This Year

By: Mackenzie J. Caspersen

This year I would like to achieve many things. I will mainly focus on my handwriting. By doing this it may be possible for other people to read it and I could get better notebook grades. I hope that I can achieve this.

My Goals for 6th Grade

By Yuki Fushimi

By the end of 6th grade, my goals are to get organized, be patient, and practice friendship. I will do things neatly, write words as clearly as I can, so people can read them easily, be silent when someone says so, listen to the person who’s speaking, never talk when someone is talking, work together with other people, and be caring for others.

I would like to be really neat for 7th grade. I want to care about others, solve problems without any help, and make a strong effort for 7th grade.

Organization

By Erik Jansson

In my year as a sixth grader, I would like to improve myself in the vital art of organization. I would like to practice this because of the fact that I am not really good at it, plus every subject says it is very important- for instance Science, Math, LA, and Social Studies. If I learn this, a lot of subjects will be a cinch for me. In fact, if I learn this, I’ll probably get much better grades a lot easier.

My Goal

By Shawn Morris

My goals for this year are to improve in soccer and learn a lot more than I already know. I went to also improve in math and things I have problems with.  I want to be pushed harder by my teachers and also make new friends in the class. My biggest goal is to go out of year six and have learned a lot more than I know

The Responsible One

By Pierre Berger

My goal for 6th grade is to be as responsible as possible for my stuff (homework, etc…). That means I am going to be more prepared, not like last year. It was kind of bad. I forgot my things for class, had to stay in at break, but now I said: “Give me a break!!!” There came the summer holidays, and now I am way more organized. I plan on continuing to be organized because - responsibility is my everyday goal. I am very happy about this.

My Organizational Goal

By Max Bessler

My main goal for 6th grade is to improve on my organizational skills. If I’m more organized, I also will be more prepared and that would lead me to better grades. It would also help me if I would organize my time, because I actually could plan myself some extra time to check my work and that would lead me again to better grades. If I would do all of this, I would have an easier time at school and achieve higher marks.

The Organization

By: Benni Kolbert

My goal for this year is to improve on organization. Last year I was really sloppy and unorganized. I couldn’t find any of my work because I had so many loose papers. This year I want to have everything better organized, so I can push up my grades through organization. I have noticed that I am already a lot more organized in 6th grade. I am very happy about that, and I will probably be a lot more successful this year.

Grade 7th and 8th Interviews

Visiting Cairo

By: Craig R. Russell

This summer break, after a rock-climbing school trip adventure, during six long and enjoyable weeks, Karim Nour spoke Arabic in his home town Cairo. Egypt has a population of 76,117,421 people and is located in northern Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, the Gaza Strip, and the Red Sea. Karim said that he liked his holidays. Things he enjoyed the most were playing golf on Egypt’s soft green grass, watching the Matrix 1, 2, 3, and a strange Egyptian movie with a lot of dancing and singing instead of words. But even in Egypt where the crime rate is lower than in other countries, some unfortunate things may happen like “swimming in a sea full of trash” or eating rice “that tasted like it had been cooked in toilet water.”  When his holidays were coming to an end, he did not look forward to school, but he did look back at what he had done, like holding a baby lion in his own arms. I hope you, just like me, see that Egypt is a different place and worth a visit.

All the Way from the U.S.A.

By: Kevin Klenke

Anton is back from America, Michigan, about 2 hours away from Detroit, and is entering this school. Now, he lives with his grandmother and his parents too, but only for a short period of time. The good part of his summer was when his nice grandmother gave him twenty euros. He bought himself some CD’s and clothes. On his free time, he switched on the computer to download, music, games, and so on. He won money by betting online. Anton visited lots of old friends to do some partying.

For a short time his dad cleaned his room, while he ate his favorite food, a doener.

The weather here was extremely different from where he used to live in the United States. It was cold and rainy in the U.S., but in summer it was great.  Here the weather was pretty much okay.

What he thinks was unfair was that his parents told him to read a big book called Tom Clancy's The Bear and the Dragon. That was his summer break before he went to school.

A Nice Summer

By Michael Stenzel

A vacation with much travel-doesn’t that sound nice? At least it is when you have a summer like Phillip Bergner’s. He spent the first two weeks in a sailing school at the Chiemsee and in a climbing school in Tyrol. After that he flew to Italy to visit friends for one week. “They showed me the city they lived in and my friend showed me his Xbox games.”

When he was at home again, Phillip played on the computer and went to the freibad with his friends almost every day when he was bored. Like every year, he and his family flew to San Antonio, Texas, to meet their friends and relatives there. He went to a ranch and played paintball and game cube with his friends.  After that he had a lot of fun going camping at a river for two days and one night .That sounded like a nice summer.

Luckily enough, his family decided to go to Berlin where they had lived for five years. Julius was going to see his old girlfriend, Laura, and go to the Gymnasium with her. Now, Julius was going to a Berliner Gymnasium, which meant he was going to school where no one cared about academics.

One day after getting out of school, his bike fell to pieces and tenth graders made fun of him. Shortly after the trip, he went back to doing various normal activities. Julius will always remember- he is home in Berlin.

At Home in Berlin

By Connor DeBruler

Julius had stepped off the bus, when he was handed a tan envelope. He was free from school and had a whole summer in front of him. This was great! He went home knowing he had a full summer. This was bliss! Absolutely what could go wrong?

Well, something went horribly wrong.   As the beginning of the summer came, tiny droplets of H2O fell from the sky like little kamikaze pilots trying to destroy an innocent boy’s summer. It was raining; this was a big problem because Julius couldn’t release his overall need to expend some athletic ability. It was too wet to play basketball. He was bored.

Being in Berlin

By Anton Plier

Kevin’s summer was a mixture of relaxing and learning. He learned everything about the history of Berlin, and he saw the wall that once stood there. He learned about other historic events that happened, such as walking around and asking his dad questions. He also saw more modern things like the IMAX Theater.

The other part of his summer, Kevin spent at home playing basketball on a team and on the street. He was really good too. He also spent some time playing on his new computer and watching the Olympics. Kevin had a lot of fun during the summer.

Back to the Outback

By Karen O’Brien

What’s better than going to visit your relatives during your vacation? Nothing beats seeing your “Nan”,” Pop,” ”Nona,” and ”Nono,” Beau agrees. Beau’s summer vacation to Australia took him back to his home country and back to his relatives. As Beau stepped out of the plane, eyes drooping and exhausted from the 24 hour flight, he was greeted with wintry weather of 9°C.

Nan and Pop are Beau’s mother’s parents, and Nona and Nono are his father’s parents. Along with getting to see them, he also got to see his cousins, aunties, and uncles. At his uncle’s house, he was riding on the black driveway on his new green scooter, when he drove over a kind of pothole and tumbled over his handlebars. Landing on his left kneecap, he stuck his hand out to try and stop the awful fall. He dislocated his kneecap, which became swollen and puffy. Fortunately he recovered over a matter of time. Beau also adds, “I hate flashbacks!”

While in Australia, he also went to school. Imagine that going to school during your summer holidays. Envy made my eyes shine green when Beau told me they only have three sheets of homework per week!

Meeting your best friend is always a great moment, but going to his confirmation and spending an evening eating pizza in front of the X-box with him is even better.

All things, good or bad, must come to an end, and Beau admits he was quite sad upon departure.

Big Youngster Tournament in Italy

By Felix Katzer

The best teams, with the best players, from all over the world ,came to participate in the Unofficial Handball World Cup. Simon Radoor plays for the HC Erlangen. He lives in Herzogenaurach and came all the way to play with his old peers in the H.E.I. team from Denmark. All players were there to win, but only one team could.

The teams entered the city of Teramano under the spicy sun. All players were looking forward seeing the upcoming parade. All countries made a march through the city, as the inhabitants of Teramano and the families of the players watched them as they passed. “It was nice to see the city get new life,” Simon Radoor said to on one of the reporters as the parade came to an end.

After playing some games, the Danish team became the favorites. They qualified for the quarterfinals after beating Slovenia. Giving Croatia no chance, they entered the semifinals. After three hard days of playing, the teams got a time out on the lovely beach of Teramano for two days. The teams had lots of fun playing on the soft white sand and in the clean blue sea. But they always had in mind the upcoming games and were practicing while the families turned on the grill. But two more days had to be overcome.

In the semifinals the Danish team faced Latvia, but the Danish team couldn’t withstand the intelligent movements of Latvia. However, their elegance showed that they would be a big candidate next year. Simon will give his enemies no chance to win anymore.

Bored or Not Bored?

(That Is the Question)

By Hardy Pace

The teachers dismissed the school. All the kids ran out, smiles glowing on their faces. Summer had begun. We start here with Michael’s summer interview. Michael said he was bored, so I started off asking him if he would rather have been in school. “NO! I’d much rather be bored at home than working or being bored at school!” he replied, absolutely outraged. After this I wasn’t expecting any enthusiastic answers, but I kept listening and realized I was wrong.

During our conversation, Michael explained that he played a lot of exciting video games, such as Age of Empires II, a game where you have to create and expand a civilization, and also went to Rügen. Rügen is a small German island off the northeastern coast. It rained and poured almost everyday, but there were one or two days where the sun dared to look out among the clouds, and on those days, Michael and his family rode on their bikes. Unfortunately, the water was freezing, so Michael had to make due without swimming. He would much rather have been playing computer-games.

When back on the mainland, he went to the “freibad” where he swam with friends and played some basketball, shooting hoops in his driveway. He says that if he could change his summer, he would have changed the weather from rainy to warm and sunny. He also would have liked to fly to Canada to visit his family and go camping. I would have liked that summer, too! It sounds pretty exciting!

Ella’s Holiday in Greece.

By Mia Green

Whilst Ella was on her summer break, she went to Greece in Zakinthos for two weeks on the first of August through the 15th.  She went with her friend, Natasha, and Natasha’s family who come from Manchester. Natasha’s sister, Kayliegh, invited a friend named Becky to go as well.

The whole family went to do water sports, which included; paragliding, paddle boating canoeing, tubing, and lots of other things too. They also went to the beach and sunbathed. At night they went to clubs which were only for people under 18. They also went shopping, and Ella bought some presents for the family and friends.

For the last seven years Natasha’s family have been going to Greece, and they stay in the same villa. The villa has two floors, and Natasha and Ella stayed upstairs. Next year Ella might be going back to Zakithos with the family. I’ve asked Ella what she would like do on her 2nd year, and she said she would like to go paragliding and do lots of other water sports.

Good Summer, Bad Summer, In - Between Summer

By Maddy Austin

Whether you’re traveling everywhere or staying at home, summer is a welcome break from school. Now that we’re back, the season is coming to a close, and people are talking about their vacations to each other. I talked to Melanie Stenzel about her summer, which was a rather relaxing one. For the first two weeks after school, Melanie and her family went to a small German island called Rügen. Even though the weather wasn’t always so great, they spent as much time as possible outdoors, riding bikes, taking walks, and seeing the few cities on the island. Stralsund, one of the towns, had a wonderful exhibit about the ocean and its plants and animals. Baabe and Middelhagen were two other cities on the island.

Once they got back, Melanie said, they had a fest in their town, where she met a lot of people from her old school. Her family also had two visitors from Canada; Sarah, age 16, and Sarah’s mother, Angie.

After that, “I hung out and watched T.V. a lot,” said Melanie, laughing. She relaxed with friends from her old school, both boys and girls, and went to the movies, though not as much as she would have liked. One friend even talked her into watching a few horror movies, like Halloween and the Scream series.

Of course, most people don’t hang out with their friends all the time, so what else did she do? She volunteered for church and read to little children, and her family took a trip to Wal-mart near Munich. They got a lot of things that are American and mostly can’t be bought in Germany, like cranberry juice (Melanie’s favorite), Rice Krispies, and marshmallows.

I asked her, overall, what she thought of her summer, and she said she’d had better. She is already looking forward to next summer when she will visit Canada and family. Enjoy the school year and welcome back everyone!

LYON – Hilton Hotel

Author: un known

Hardy sounded pretty excited when he was talking about his vacation. His best part was when he went to Lyon and stayed at the Hilton Hotel. He told me that it was the best part of the holiday. The food was the best. At Lyon, he ate a lot of bacon and burgers and had room service every night.

But when I started asking about his vacation in Italy, he did not sound that excited anymore.  He thought the food was disgusting. The pizza crust he hated the most! It was much too thin, and he did not like the people. They were unfriendly.

When I asked him about his time in Germany, he told me he played a game that was called Age of Mythology. He also crashed into a wall with his bike. When he got bored with that, he went swimming with his friends and had fun splashing other people. That was his vacation in Germany.

After that he went to Croatia. A scary part was when he went over the border and saw a house with bullet holes in the walls and windows. In Croatia he ate a lot of shrimp with his grandparents. His grandma had her birthday there and turned 60 years old. He enjoyed staying by the ocean and swimming. He also had fun when he got dragged by his dad’s paddling boat. That was Hardy’s nice vacation.

Living Abroad- Vacation at Home

By Karim Nour

He was at home, but not really. Craig Russell, a Grade 8 student this year went to Brazil during his summer vacation. We would like to know from him, how it feels to be back at home only for a few weeks.

Craig is half Brazilian and half British. Brazil is like his home country. When he left Germany by plane, he was very excited to see his family. He had a lot of fun by playing paintball, surfing on his body board at Copa Cabana, and riding a banana boat.

But most of all, he was very happy to meet his old friends. He also played with his old soccer team and won 3:2! Finally, he had a lot of exciting parties.

Welcome back to Germany, Craig!

Mia’s Trip to England

By Ella Green

Mia went to England for the summer holidays for five weeks. She went on the 12th of July until the 17th of August. It took her one hour and forty minutes on the plane from Frankfurt to Manchester. When Mia arrived in England, she went to Liverpool to see her family.
