Welcome to the Middle School

Welcome to the Franconian International School, Middle School! The aim of this booklet is to provide you with a detailed overview of the daily running of the FIS Middle School, and to provide you with the answers to most of the questions you are likely to have.

We aim to prepare our students to become citizens of the world; the school is concerned with the development of the whole child as individual and as a member of a community. The FIS Middle School aims to provide an environment in which individual attention is given to the well-being of each student both academically and personally.

The program in the FIS Middle School provides a link between the FIS Elementary School and our FIS High School. The transition that takes place during these years shapes the future of the students; therefore, we value and encourage a shared responsibility with parents to ensure the smoothest and most enjoyable of learning experiences.

The community at the Franconian International School provides a small, friendly, and caring environment, where the individual needs of every student are nurtured.

We hope that you find this booklet useful, and we encourage you to spend time familiarizing yourself and your child with its contents.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at school.

Sincerely,

The FIS Middle School Team

Philosophy and Objectives

The Franconian International School educates students in an international environment according to high academic standards.  It provides an atmosphere respectful of diverse cultures and promotes responsible citizenship in the spirit of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The school is committed to promoting international and intercultural experiences for its students and maintaining its good reputation as an association.

The FIS serves primarily the international community of the Metropolitan Region Nuremberg in northern Bavaria.  Local students are also an important part of the learning community.  The FIS encourages parents to actively support the school and the education of their children.

The school offers challenging programs in academics, information technology, sports and fine arts.  At the FIS education goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge.  It encourages curiosity and creativity.  It stresses inquiry and self-discovery, the development and strengthening of individual talents, and the appreciation of democratic structures.  It fosters open-mindedness, respect and sensitivity toward the feelings of others, and the development of a sense of fairness and integrity.

The Franconian International School:

Educates students from all over the world regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, or ethnic background, and helps them to reach their fullest potential intellectually, socially, and physically.

Provides highly qualified, motivated, caring teachers who support the school's philosophy    and objectives.

Offers a structured program based on a curriculum which ensures that the students acquire the skills and techniques necessary to cope with the challenges of the future.

Provides appropriate resources in a safe, challenging, adaptable and supportive environment in which the student is an active participant.

Builds a team atmosphere, in which students, teachers, parents and administrators are       partners in the learning and growing process.

Promotes a positive and reciprocal relationship with the host nation at the local, regional and national levels, which takes advantage of the educational opportunities of living in Germany and Europe.

Continues to grow with its students by adding a grade level each year, and will ultimately (2009) offer the opportunity for graduation with the International Baccalaureate diploma.

Before school

Students are not supervised until 8:20 and are asked not to arrive before this time. At 8:20 students should make their way to their homeroom, first visiting their lockers to store their belongings and collect all necessary materials for the first two lessons.

Homeroom

Students should be in their homeroom before 8:35. Attendance is taken at 8:35 each morning by the homeroom teacher. Students arriving after the homeroom registration period must sign the late list in the school office. Punctuality at homeroom is as important as at lessons. Many important notices are given at this time and there are other routines to attend to.

Break time

Students should be in or around the area of their homerooms.  During break, students should collect their books and supplies for their next lessons as well as enjoy a healthy snack.

Lunch Time

Students will go to the cafeteria, eat their lunch, and will then be dismissed outside for recess activities. With permission, students may also go to the Library/Media Center during recess, and they will also be supervised during this time.  After the lunch recess, students will return to their lockers to collect all necessary materials for the remainder of the day.

End of school

Students should organize their belongings and, following class dismissal, students should leave the building unless taking part in an after school activity. Student who take the bus should proceed immediately to the bus lane.
