ABSENCES AND TARDINESS

Since school attendance is directly related to academic progress, FIS takes a serious attitude towards absence and late arrivals.  Absence impedes not only the individual’s progress but also the interaction of the class.

¨      Please help the school compile its daily absence lists promptly by reporting your child’s absence by phone.

¨      Please call the school (09132/797910) between 8:45 and 8:55.

¨      If you know in advance that your child will be absent for several days, please notify the school office.

¨      Please notify the school office if your child has a contagious disease such as chicken pox, measles, pink eye, and scarlet fever.

¨      Students arriving late must be signed in at the office.

¨      Students being taken from school before the end of the school day must be signed out in the office by a parent.  If someone other than the parent or guardian is picking up the child, the school must be informed before the child will be allowed to leave the school.

¨      Medical appointments should be scheduled outside of school hours whenever possible.

¨      Work assignments during a child’s absence should be completed promptly upon return.

¨      Please note that FIS must follow government guidelines regarding the number of absences legally permitted during a school year.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY PROGRAM

FIS offers an After School Activity Program, which takes place between 3:15 and 4:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Activities are offered in many areas, including: cooking, basketball, gymnastics, swimming, the arts, and more.

Students who participate in the ASAP must be picked up promptly by their parents, as bus transportation will not be available at this time.

No supervision is available for siblings of the student participating in any after school activity.

Parents have the primary responsibility for their child’s behavior while at school. Furthermore, it is their responsibility to set standards of behavior for their children. From such a model students develop the self-discipline which enhances a successful school experience. We believe that all students are entitled to a safe, enjoyable and rewarding school experience.

Teachers also have the responsibility to create a calm and pleasant learning atmosphere free from disturbance. In order to accomplish this, they must maintain order. For this reason, student behavior, which distracts from this goal cannot be tolerated:

¨      Outbursts during class

¨      Rudeness in speech or demeanor

¨      Refusal to follow directions

¨      Defiance of teachers

¨      Fighting with other students (includes verbal and physical abuse)

¨      Destruction of school property

¨      Not respecting the rights and property of others

¨      Reporting to class without proper materials

¨      Other behaviors deemed inappropriate by school personnel

These are examples of misbehavior which will not be permitted. Parents will be informed when disciplinary action has been taken.

General School Wide Rules

We expect all FIS students to:

¨      Follow directions the first time they are given by an adult.

¨      When lining up and/or walking in the hallways, keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.

¨      Walk quietly at all times.

¨      Respect others-treat others the way you expect to be treated.

The staff at FIS has developed a discipline program based on the belief that:

¨      Students, parents, and the school share the responsibility for creating the best possible learning environment.

¨      Student behavior/conduct which interferes with students learning or with teacher instruction is unacceptable.

¨      All students are entitled to a safe, enjoyable and rewarding school experience.

At FIS we aim to encourage positive behavior and uphold values which promote spiritual, moral, cultural and mental development in children.

We aim to:

¨      Develop in pupils a sense of self-discipline and an acceptance of responsibility for their own actions, thus enhancing their self-esteem.

¨      Promote the development of children’s courtesy, honesty, respect and tolerance for others.

¨      Develop in children the understanding and skills that will enable them to work       and play in co-operation with others.

¨      Foster respect for other people’s rights, abilities, property and beliefs.

We are concerned with behavior for the following reasons:

¨      Society depends on a disciplined community.

¨      Children need discipline for their own well-being.

¨      A disciplined environment facilitates effective teaching/learning.

The Management of Positive Behavior

Considerate behavior is expected at all times and this is embodied in the following school rules:

¨      Follow the teacher’s instructions the first time.

¨      Put your hand up when you want to speak.

¨      Listen when others are speaking.

¨      Be kind: Do not hurt others with hands, feet, objects or words.

¨      Be safe: Use equipment sensibly and carefully. Walk around school.

¨      Be tidy: Put things away carefully after you have used them.

¨      Be respectful: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Unacceptable Behavior

This is infringement of the school rules. Parents are informed of the consequences. These consequences are consistently applied throughout the school.

Consequences

First instance of misbehavior:                     initials on board

Second instance of misbehavior:                miss 5 minutes playtime or go to office with work for 15 minutes

Third instance of misbehavior:                    warning slip (pink) home for parents to sign

Fourth instance of misbehavior:                  letter (red) home to parents to sign

There will be a fresh start each day.
