Information Technology


Philosophy and Objectives

 

The Franconian International School educates students in an international environment according to high academic standards.  It provides an atmosphere respectful of diverse cultures and promotes responsible citizenship in the spirit of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The school is committed to promoting international and intercultural experiences for its students and maintaining its good reputation as an association.

 

The FIS serves primarily the international community of Nuremberg, Erlangen, Fuerth, Schwabach and Herzogenaurach in northern Bavaria.  Local students are also an important part of the learning community.  The FIS encourages parents to actively support the school and the education of their children. 

 

The school offers challenging programs in academics, information technology, sports and fine arts.  At the FIS education goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge.  It encourages curiosity and creativity.  It stresses inquiry and self-discovery, the development and strengthening of individual talents, and the appreciation of democratic structures.  It fosters open-mindedness, respect and sensitivity toward the feelings of others, and the development of a sense of fairness and integrity.

 

The Franconian International School:

 

Educates students from all over the world regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, or ethnic background, and helps them to reach their fullest potential intellectually, socially, and physically.

 

Provides highly qualified, motivated, caring teachers who support the school's philosophy    and objectives.

 

Offers a structured program based on a curriculum which ensures that the students acquire the skills and techniques necessary to cope with the challenges of the future.

 

            Provides appropriate resources in a safe, challenging, adaptable and supportive environment in which the student is an active participant.

 

Builds a team atmosphere, in which students, teachers, parents and administrators are       partners in the learning and growing process.

 

            Promotes a positive and reciprocal relationship with the host nation at the local, regional and national levels, which takes advantage of the educational opportunities of living in Germany and Europe.

 

            Continues to grow with its students by adding a grade level each year, and will ultimately (2009) offer the opportunity for graduation with the International Baccalaureate diploma.

 

            

 

Aims

It is the aim of the Franconian International School to:

 

 

·        make Information Technology an essential part of the education of all learners and that the understanding and knowledge of computers, associated hardware and software is enhanced by the appropriate use within the school and its curriculum.

 

·        combine knowledge with practical application and support general education by developing problem solving abilities.

 

·        educate our students for the present and future use of computing technology.

 

·        ensure that every student is able to use the computer as a tool for everyday tasks, is able to utilize the available applications and programs, and enjoys the challenges therein.

 

·        maintain close links between the IT staff and classroom teachers in the planning of interrelated lessons.

 

 

Teaching Objectives

 

 

Kindergarten

 

            The average student should be able to:

 

Technological Awareness

·        describe the main components of a computer – mouse, keyboard, monitor and computer

·        use the mouse within limits of motor skills and hand size

·        open a program by mouse click and enter key on a screen icon

 

Keyboarding

·        use the space bar and enter keys

·        use alphabet keys when completing very simple tasks.

 

Paint, Draw and Graphics

·        select and use some of the basic paint and draw features.

·        change the color of some drawing tools

·        use some line and shape tools

 

 

Grade 1        

 

            The average student should be able to:

 

Technological Awareness

·        describe the main components of a computer and give a simple explanation of each part’s use.  (mouse, keyboard, monitor, computer, printer)

·        describe and demonstrate how to insert a CD-ROM

·        start and shut down a computer

·        use the mouse

 

Keyboarding

·        use the alphabet keys on the keyboard.

·        use the space bar, enter, shift and backspace keys.

 

Paint, Draw and Graphics

·        select and use many of the basic paint and draw features such as the pencil, eraser, paintbrush, spray can, and paint bucket.

·        change the color of the brush, bucket or spray can in a paint program

·        use the line and shape tools

 

 

Word Processing

·        enter single words and short sentences in a word processing program

·        delete text using the backspace key

·        change text size

 

 

Grade 2

 

The average student should be able to:

 

Technological Awareness

·        describe the peripheral components of a computer and give a simple explanation of each part’s use.  (floppy disk, floppy disk drive, CD-ROM, CD-ROM drive, right and left mouse buttons, power buttons of the monitor and the computer)

·        start, restart, and shut down a computer

·        move, point, click and double-click the mouse

·        open, close and minimize windows using the mouse.

 

Keyboarding

·        use the letter and number keys on the keyboard.

·        use the basic punctuation keys ( . , ? ‘ )

·        use the space bar, enter, shift, delete and backspace keys.

·        use keyboarding skills to type words, phrases, and sentences.

 

Paint, Draw and Graphics

·        use the pencil, eraser, paintbrush, spray can, and paint bucket in a paint/draw program.

·        change the color or pattern of the paintbrush, paint bucket or spray can in a paint program

·        use the line tool and shape tools and text tool in a paint/draw program.

·        draw a picture and type a description in a paint program.

 

Word Processing

·        and with some efficiency enter text in a word processing program.

·        delete text using the delete or backspace key.

·        change the font and text size

·        with some guidance, open and save a word processing file.

·        show a clear understanding of the insertion point and location of the cursor.

 

Information Systems

·        use a floppy disk for saving and loading files

·        handle CD-ROMs appropriately

·        search for appropriate information on the web (guided by teacher)

·        search for appropriate information in a multimedia encyclopedia.

·        print their files on a default printer

 

 

Grade 3

 

The average student should be able to:

 

Technological Awareness

·        select, open, close and save files.

·        demonstrate a clear understanding of how to use a mouse.

·        use basic keyboard shortcuts (home, end, page up, page down).

·        insert, load files to, save files to and eject a floppy disk.

 

Keyboarding

·        use the alphabet keys with some degree of speed and accuracy.

·        use all number keys on the main keyboard.

·        use basic punctuation keys (. , ' : ; ? ").

·        use the keyboard's main control keys (enter, shift, caps lock, escape).

 

Paint, Draw & Graphics

·        highlight, move and change a graphic in a paint program.

·        use the line, shape and text tools in a paint program.

·        independently use basic paint and draw programs with some efficiency.

 

Word Processing

·        open, close and save word processing files.

·        with some guidance, format, cut, copy, paste and delete text.

·        use the spell checker tool of a word processing program with some guidance.

·        insert a table into a text document.

 

Information Systems:

·        with some guidance, print files on network printers.

·        do a basic search on a multimedia encyclopedia.

 

Network Awareness

·        with some guidance, access, open, and save files on a network.

 

Internet/Telecommunications

·        open an e-mail program.

·        retrieve, read, reply to and delete e-mail messages.

·        compose, address and send e-mal messages.

·        use a Web browser to access and search Web sites.

 

Spreadsheets:

·        insert a table into a text document.

·        move to a specific cell and enter information.

·        format a table using templates.

 

 

Grade 4

 

The average student should be able to:

 

Technological Awareness:

·        select, delete, move and copy files and folders.

·        demonstrate a clear understanding of how to use a mouse including left and right mouse buttons and wheel functions.

·        change the name of an icon or file.

 

Keyboarding

·        use all alphabet keys with some degree of speed and accuracy.

·        use all number keys on the main keyboard.

·        use all basic punctuation keys.

·        use the keyboard's main control keys.

 

Paint, Draw & Graphics

·        highlight, move, copy, rotate and flip a graphic in a paint program.

·        use a large variety of line, shape and text tools in a paint program.

·        independently use basic paint and draw programs with some efficiency.

 

Word Processing

·        format, cut, copy, paste and delete text.

·        use the spell checker tool of a word processing program.

 

Information Systems:

·        browse through the contents of a CD-ROM.

·        print files on different printers on the network.

·        do a search on a multimedia encyclopedia.

 

Network Awareness

·        access, open, and save files on a network.

·        give a reasonable explanation on what a network is and how it operates.

 

Internet/Telecommunications

·        retrieve, read, reply to and delete e-mail messages.

·        compose, address and send e-mail messages.

·        copy and paste information into e-mail messages.

·        attach files to e-mail messages.

·        use a Web browser to access and search Web sites.

·        save sites using a bookmark.

 

Multimedia

·        create a graphic and display it on the screen.

·        place text and graphics in multimedia documents.

·        add photos to multimedia documents.

 

Electronic Presentations

·        create a new slide and delete a slide.

·        combine slides into a presentation.
