Year 10 Newsletter 7

October 12, 2007

From our Middle School Coordinator, Mr. Peter Thorpe:

During the week of September 24th, the Middle School classes took part in the annual week long field trips.  One of the main goals of these trips is to develop stronger bonds between classmates by engaging in team building exercises and interacting with each other outside of the normal classroom environment.  We look forward to nurturing the bonds which the students have developed during the past week.  Here is a summary of each of the trips.

The Grade 5 classes spent the week in the Berchtesgaden area in southern Germany.  The students took part in rock climbing and abseiling activities with two professional mountain guides.  Other activities included getting quite wet while visiting Schloss Hellbrunn near Salzburg, exploring the salt mine in Berchtesgaden, taking a boat ride on Königsee and hiking to the Eiskappelle glacier.  Mrs. Astorino, Ms. Bouvier, Mr. Althoff and Mrs. Obermanns also accompanied the Grade 5 class.

Mr. Manna, Mr. Haug and Ms. Kraus took the Grade 6 class to the Euro Space Center in Transinne, Belgium.  The students took part in many of the training exercises that astronauts must do to prepare for space travel including the multi axis chair, the manned maneuvering unit and the moon walk chair.  They also performed a simulated space shuttle launch and built their own model rockets. These activities are directly related to the unit on Space that is studied in Grade Six Science. In the afternoons, the class visited a nearby safari park, Bertrix Castle and the caves in Han.

The Grade 7 classes joined the Grade 5’s for the bus ride to Hintersee in southern Germany.  From there the students hiked 2.5 hours up to the Blaueishütte (1680m) with all of their supplies for the week.  The next few days entailed much rock climbing and abseiling.  Again, professional guides were used to ensure safety standards were adhered to.  The Grade 7 classes were chaperoned by Mr. Thorpe, Mr. Sayer, Mrs. Ang and Ms. Kaiser

The Grade 8 class, along with Mrs. Pontones and Mrs. Carballes, took part in the first half of an exchange with a school in Oviedo, Spain.  The students lived with the families of the Spanish students for the week.  While in Spain, they visited the beach, an aquarium and the local city council.  The class also learned to play Bolera, visited a prehistoric park and visited “Multiaventura” where they participated in paintball games, a treasure hunt and climbing. It was an excellent opportunity for the children to practice the Spanish they have been learning at the FIS.  The Spanish students will be visiting the FIS and staying with our Grade 8 families in the spring of 2008.

The entire field trip week was a huge success!  The trips are an excellent part of our Middle School curriculum and a great opportunity for the students to experience activities that they may otherwise not get a chance to participate in.  I would like to thank all of the teachers and parents what volunteered their time to make each of these trips a success!

Congratulations:  To Mr. Matt Althoff and his wife Heather on the birth of their son Samuel George Althoff on Sunday, September 30th.  Samuel is the first child for Mr. Althoff and his wife, and everyone is healthy and happy!

High School Activities Next Week:

University Fair in Munich

Next Monday, 15 October, the Grade 10 and 11 students will attend a University Fair in Munich, where university representatives from institutions around the world will be available to speak with students. A letter was sent home with the students this week. Parents, please read over the letter with your students, and send the permission slip back to Mrs. Ang by Monday.

PSAT Testing

As one part of the FIS’s post-secondary and career guidance program, next Wednesday the Grade 10 students, and some Grade 11 students will be taking a standardized test called the PSAT. The test is mandatory in Grade 10 and optional in Grade 11. The primary purpose of the test is to demonstrate to the students their strengths and weaknesses in the areas of critical reading, math, and writing, and to provide recommendations for areas to focus on improving.  It is also a practice test for the SAT, an exam that students considering studying in the US should take in Grade 11 and 12. After taking the test, all students will have access to an online program called MyRoad, a comprehensive post-secondary and career planning tool.  Test results will arrive in December.

Parent Teacher Conferences:  Will be held on Tuesday, October 23 for the Kiga/Elementary School and Wednesday, October 24 for the Middle/High School.  If you have not already done so, please complete and return one sign up form per child.  The Kiga / Elementary School conferences will take place at the Dassler Villa and will be scheduled.   The schedule for the Kiga / ES conferences will be developed in the next week and letters detailing your appointment times will be sent home with the students the following week.  In order to accommodate the open forum style of the Middle / High School conferences these conferences will take place at the Vereinshaus in Herzogenaurach located at Hintere Gasse 22.  Please see map below for directions to the Vereinshaus from the Convent Campus.

There will therefore be no classes for the Kiga & Elementary School students on Tuesday, October 23 and no classes for the Middle & High School students on Wednesday, October 24.  Students in Grades Two through Four are encouraged to join their parents at the conferences.  Attendance at the conferences is mandatory for students in Grades Five through 11.  After School Activities will be cancelled on Tuesday, October 23 for the Kiga/ES students and on Wednesday, October 24 for the MS/HS Students.

School Pictures: Individual and class pictures will be taken on Tuesday, October 16 (Whole School Photo, sibling portraits and Middle and High School class pictures and portraits) and Wednesday October 17 (Kindergarten and Elementary School students’ class pictures and portraits), by D.i.g.i.t.@.l Schulfotografie.  Processing time will be approximately two weeks, after which the pictures will be given to the students on a purchase or return option.

The whole school photo will be taken at 9:00 at the Dassler Villa on October 16. As such, Middle & High School students who take the bus will be taken directly to the Dassler Villa. Busses will then go to the Convent Campus to bring the remainder of the students to the Dassler Villa. After the whole school photo, Middle & High School students will then be bussed back to the Convent Campus.

Dismissal Requests at the CC:  In an effort alleviate the traffic congestion around dismissal time, the MS/HS teams asks that parents picking up their children consider the following options:

·       Plan to arrive 10-15 after dismissal to ensure that the busses have left the premises.

·       Sign the permission slip allowing your child to leave the school grounds on their own, and arrange to meet them at a predetermined spot not too far from the school.

Parents of bus students who are changing their normal routine at the end of the day by either changing bus lines or not riding the bus, are asked to inform the office early in the so that accurate bus lists can be created for the teachers on bus supervision

Thank you for your consideration in these matters

10. Bayerische Bonsaitage – The 10. Annual Bayerische Bonsaitage will take place this weekend, October 13th & 14th, at the Hotel Pyramide in Fürth,.  For more information please visit the website www.bbt-2007.de.   Our very own ES Music Teacher Yuki Koyama will be performing with the Deutsch-Japanischer-Chor at 10:00 and 13:00 on October 13th.

English Book Fair:  There will be an English book fair held in the art room of the Dassler Villa on Monday, October 22.  Please send money with your children on this day if they are interested in purchasing books.  Parents are also welcome to attend!

Halloween Party: The FIS Halloween Parties will be held on the morning of Friday, October 26th. Our P.T.O. has organized several activities in the Elementary School including a Halloween Party with games, face painting, treats and pumpkin carving. Students may come to school dressed in costume.  In the Middle School there will be pumpkin carving for grades 5, 6 & 7, which will be jointly coordinated by the P.T.O and the Middle School Student Council.

To participate in the pumpkin carving, each student should bring a spoon (labelled with child’s name) in a plastic bag with which he/she will carve out the inside of the pumpkin. Secondly each student should bring two or three old newspapers to cover his/her desktop as well as the carpet around the desk to prevent those stains that often occur in an activity such as this. The pumpkins will be sent home with the students at the close of the school day. The cost of the pumpkins will be covered by the FIS.

Fall Break:  Will take place this year during the week of October 29 - November 4.  As such, Friday, October 26th will be a half day with the Elementary School/Kiga closing at 12:00 and the Middle/High School closing at 12:10.  School will resume on Monday, November 5th.

Sign In / Out:  Please remember that ALL visitors to the school building are required to sign in and out at the school office, and wear a visitor tag while in the school building.  It is vital for us to know exactly who is in the building at all times in case of an emergency evacuation. Thank you!

Cold and Flu Season…is upon us! This is the time of year when colds and flu can become a problem. Although there is no cure for the common cold or the flu, there are some ways of lowering your risk of becoming sick. Eat a healthy diet, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as this is the way that most germs get into your system. Most importantly, because the viruses that cause these infections are often sneezed or coughed into the air it helps to stay away from those who are already ill.  As such, if your child is sick, please keep them at home to avoid infecting others.

Mrs. Ang’s Counselor Notes:

Thinking about CAREERS in Elementary and Middle School

Working with elementary and middle school students on making career considerations is most likely not on top of most parents’ agendas. Every student does, however, have career needs that coincide with his or her personal development, and knowing these can help parents foster in their children a more tangible idea of who they are and where they would like to go in the future. Career development is a life-long process.

The following is a short list of ways parents can encourage in their child the development of perceptions of future careers. This information has been provided by the American School Counselor Association. If you would like information on the corresponding developmental traits of children of different age groups, please contact Mrs. Ang at ang@the-fis.de.

Pre-Kindergarten – Third Grade

Growth Areas: Distinguish between work and play. Identify different types of work. Experience different types of work activities. Describe how decisions are made. Demonstrate a positive attitude. Identify personal feelings.

Parent Involvement: Listen and encourage. Encourage involvement in a variety of sports/hobbies. Positively reinforce child for completing chores. Praise efforts toward work as well as accomplishments. Show an interest in and stress importance of school. Give toys that promote role playing. Make decisions with – not for – your child.

Fourth Grade – Sixth Grade

Growth Areas: Identify personal interests, abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Describe how work at home and/or school relates to jobs in the community. Describe how work is important and attainable to all people. Describe how personal beliefs and values affect decision making.

Parent Involvement: Encourage good work habits at home. Gradually add responsibilities. Effort/experience are more important than quality. Don’t assign jobs at home based on gender to avoid stereotyping. Show various workers in your community. Participate in the school’s career education program. Listen as your child makes decisions. Keep peer pressure in mind.

Seventh Grade – Eighth Grade

Growth Areas: Demonstrate effective skills in working with others. Show an appreciation for the similarities and differences among people. Describe individual skills and aptitudes required to fulfill roles. Identify strategies for managing personal finances. Describe skills needed in a variety of occupations. Demonstrate skills needed to obtain and keep a job.

Parent Involvement: Discuss your child’s skills, interests, abilities and goals to help plan for the future. Encourage participation in service-oriented activities in the community. Help children meet a variety of workers by arranging job observations, field trips or personal interviews. Use guided money management and allow your child to make economic choices.
