From our High School Principal, Dr. Liam Browne:

IGCSE Results 2007

Another milestone was celebrated at the FIS, when the current Grade Eleven students received their IGCSE results in early August.  These were the first IGCSE results to be issued at the FIS.  This was the culmination of two years hard work for these students.  The overall IGCSE performance of the students was a credit to all involved. Over 26% of the exams entered by students were passed with either a top ‘A*’ or ‘A’ grade. To put these results in an external perspective it is worth noting that from all UK schools 19.1% of grades achieved were A*/A. In Spanish our exceptional 100% A* - C figure compares to 61.6% of all schools. Most of our other subjects also fare very favourably.

Technically there is no such thing as a “pass” grade but in practice grades C and above are generally recognized to indicate a reasonable level of competence in the subject.  Of all exams sat 72% achieved a C or better.

Official IGCSE certificates will be distributed to students in early October.

Again, congratulations to all of our Grade Eleven students!

Model United Nations just keeps on growing: MUN Alkmaar

The Model United Nations is a simulation of the work of the greatest peacekeeping organisation of the world.  Students represent a prescribed country and defend the concerns of their country passionately.  Students learn about the history of the United Nations, how to deal with official English language, complex political issues and the rules of formal parliamentary debate.

Obviously before students attend such an MUN conference much after school time is spent in preparation.  Students need to research the views of their prescribed country on a host of topics from globalisation, to environmental issues, to human rights.  In addition, students are required to learn the techniques of lobbying, formal debate and writing resolutions.

Just as the rest of the school community were beginning to think about summer holidays, five students from the FIS set out for the International Model United Nations of Alkmaar (IMUNA) in the Netherlands.  This MUN conference lasted from 28 June- 2 July. The FIS students had been given the enviable task of representing Italy.

Carolyn Schaper was the Italian delegate on the Security Council, along with Felix Katzer. The delegation also consisted of Max Seyler on the Political Committee; Max Zagler on North Atlantic Council; Chris Niksch on the Disarmament Committee and Adrien Murillon on the Committee on Management and Organization, who was also the ambassador for the Italian delegation.

From the start the FIS MUNers were involved in some intense lobbying. From the second day onwards delegates were reading policy statements, debating issues and resolutions.  The standard of this MUN was particularly high as many delegates were very experienced.  Nonetheless, the FIS MUNers acquitted themselves well.

After three days of parliamentary procedure, and in some cases 5:00 rises, this group was exhausted on their return.  I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the FIS MUNers on a job well done!

Model United Nations will continue at the FIS and we will have the opportunity to possibly attend two MUN conferences this year.  MUN workshops will take place Fridays after school in the Grade Nine room.  Students from Grade Eight to Grade Eleven are welcome to attend.

Please remember that the ASAP will run from 3:30 until 4:30 on each respective day (3:40 until 4:40 in the Middle/High School) and parents should be aware that students who take part in the After School Activity Program need to be picked up from school at 4:30  (4:40 at the CC).

After a break in January and February, we plan to have a second session in the program with some different course offerings, which will run during the months of March, April and May.

ESL Welcome Tea: The ESL Team would like to invite all parents of ESL students at the FIS (ES, MS & HS) to an informational ESL Welcome Tea on Wednesday, October 10 at the Dassler Villa (ES). We will start at 5:00 pm and finish the afternoon with some refreshments at about 6.30 pm. Our purpose for this occasion is to get to know the parents of all our students and share a little about our ESL Program. If it is possible, please leave your children at home as the presentations are designed primarily for parents.  If this is not possible, the PTO, at a cost of 2 € per child, will provide babysitting. Should you require the babysitting services please contact Marion Rehorst (Marion.rehorst@messebau-rehorst.de; 0163 - 7297902) as soon as possible so that the appropriate number of sitters can be arranged.  We are looking forward to seeing you then!

Parent Teacher Conferences:  Will be held on Tuesday, October 23 for the Kiga/Elementary School and Wednesday, October 24 for the Middle/High School.  .If you have not already done so, please complete and return one sign up form per child by Monday, October 1st.  These forms are attached once again.

There will therefore be no classes for the Kiga & Elementary School students on Tuesday, October 23 and no classes for the Middle & High School students on Wednesday, October 24.  Students in Grades Two through Four are encouraged to join their parents at the conferences.  Attendance at the conferences is mandatory for students in Grades Five through 11.  After School Activities will be cancelled on Tuesday, October 23 for the Kiga/ES students and on Wednesday, October 24 for the MS/HS Students.

School Pictures: Individual and class pictures will be taken on Tuesday, October 16 (Whole School Photo, sibling portraits and Middle and High School class pictures and portraits) and Wednesday October 17 (Kindergarten and Elementary School students’ class pictures and portraits), by D.i.g.i.t.@.l Schulfotografie.  Processing time will be approximately two weeks, after which the pictures will be given to the students on a purchase or return option.  If any families would like to have a special sibling sitting for brothers and sisters, please advise Mrs. Potrykus or Mrs. Wiegel by no later than Wednesday October 11th, and we will schedule this as well.  Please be aware that babies can only be included in sibling photos if the parent is also in the photo holding the baby. We also require three parent volunteers to assist with the sibling photos. Please contact Mrs. Potrykus at 09132-797910 if you are able to help out.

The whole school photo will be taken at 9:00 at the Dassler Villa on October 16. As such, Middle & High School students who take the bus will be taken directly to the Dassler Villa. Busses will then go to the Convent Campus to bring the remainder of the students to the Dassler Villa. After the whole school photo, Middle & High School students will then be bussed back to the Convent Campus.

Boy Scout Registration:  Friday 5th October will be our kick off day for any new Cub Scouts. We would like to invite newcomers to our pack from 1st to 5th grade to come and join us at the Dassler Villa right after school on this day. This would be an excellent opportunity for the boys to attend a Cub Scouts meeting, participate in the activities if they so please to see if they like it before they register. This meeting will last until roughly 3.15.  Parents may come along for info packets and a brief discussion about Cub Scouts, how it works and how you can help us help the boys. For more information, please call either Kathleen Kostouros at 09133 767 802, Roohee Heyl 09132 746 559 or  Carole Williamson at 09132 745 555. We hope to see you there!

English Book Fair:  There will be an English book fair held in the art room of the Dassler Villa on Monday, October 22.  Please send money with your children on this day if they are interested in purchasing books.  Parents are also welcome to attend!
