Year 10 Newsletter 4

September 21, 2007

From our Elementary School Principal, Glenn Lawler:

In the Kindergarten and Elementary classes we are well into our first IPC Units for the year! The IPC is our new International Primary Curriculum in the FIS Kindergarten and Elementary School.

The Kindergarten group’s first unit is called “All About Me”. The students are learning about themselves, their new friends in the class, and all about school. A highlight of the unit was drawing beautiful self-portraits! Grade One are “feeling their way” into their unit on “The Senses”. As well as looking at optical illusions, taste testing with noses plugged, they have been making string telephones and discovering all about sound! The students visited the “Erfahrungsfeld der Sinne” to get a real hands-on perspective. Grade Two are deep into their unit on “Rainforests”, and will be enhancing their learning by visiting the gorillas and gibbons at the Nürnberg zoo soon. Grade Three are learning all about “Communities” and will be finding out what it means to live in a community, and how different groups of people have lived together at different times and in different places. Grade Four are getting “fit for life” in their quest to learn about the human body in their Health unit. You can see that the Kindergarten and Elementary teachers are not only inspiring student learning through passion for the subjects but also making learning enjoyable!

One aspect that the IPC stresses is the importance oflearning how to learn”. The teachers are striving to inspire their pupils to understand and improve their own learning: meaningful learning, through the interdisciplinary units where the students see how the subjects inter-relate.

Apart from the knowledge, skills and understanding that the students will learn from the IPC, a vital aspect are the core values that the program instils in the students. Honesty, respect, cooperation, and sharing are the four core values of the IPC. These values are at the heart of all the IPC units and are also reflected by our own FIS Mission and Philosophy.

Last year we had a very successful start with the IPC. Feedback from the teachers and students has been very positive and no doubt the rest of the year will see the students delving into many other interesting units of inquiry as they strive to construct meaning from their learning.

Middle School Info Night: Our FIS Team would like to thank all of the parents who attended our Middle School Parent Info Night. A high percentage of our students were represented. After the opening remarks and the introduction of the Middle School staff by Mr. Peter Thorpe, Mr. René Löhnert informed us about the integration of Computer Studies with the core curriculum. This was followed by Ms. Hanna Müller, who gave parents an informative description of our Art Program. Mr. Thorpe then discussed Music in the Middle School, specifically detailing the use of the recorder in Grade 5 and the band program for Grades 6 - 8. Mrs. Michelle Ang followed with an informative description of the Middle School Ethics and Counselling program. Mr. Adrian Haug then gave a description of our Sports program followed by Mrs. Deb Obermanns who provided information regarding our Student Support Services program. Following a brief break, with refreshments provided by our PTO, there were presentations by the classroom teachers dealing with the core subjects. A thank you to all parents who attended and had the opportunity to begin the important process of home-school communication.

After School Activity Program: Our popular After School Activity Program will begin on October 1.  The courses will run for ten weeks and therefore end prior to the Christmas holidays. A list of offerings was emailed home last week and should by now have been completed and returned. Letters informing you about which activities your child has been placed will be sent home in the next weeks.

Please remember that the ASAP will run from 3:30 until 4:30 on each respective day (3:40 until 4:40 in the Middle/High School) and parents should be aware that students who take part in the After School Activity Program need to be picked up from school at 4:30  (4:40 at the CC).

After a break in January and February, we plan to have a second session in the program with some different course offerings, which will run during the months of March, April and May.

ESL Welcome Tea: The ESL Team would like to invite all parents of ESL students at the FIS (ES, MS & HS) to an informational ESL Welcome Tea on Wednesday, October 10 at the Dassler Villa (ES). We will start at 5:00 pm and finish the afternoon with some refreshments at about 6.30 pm. Our purpose for this occasion is to get to know the parents of all our students and share a little about our ESL Program. If it is possible, please leave your children at home as the presentations are designed primarily for parents.  If this is not possible, the PTO, at a cost of 2 € per child, will provide babysitting. Should you require the babysitting services please contact Marion Rehorst (Marion.rehorst@messebau-rehorst.de; 0163 - 7297902) as soon as possible so that the appropriate number of sitters can be arranged.  We are looking forward to seeing you then!

Parent Teacher Conferences:  The Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday, October 23 for the Kiga/Elementary School and Wednesday, October 24 for the Middle/High School. There will therefore be no classes for the Kiga & Elementary School students on Tuesday, October 23 and no classes for the Middle & High School students on Wednesday, October 24.  Students in Grades Two through Four are encouraged to join their parents at the conferences.  Attendance at the conferences is mandatory for students in Grades Five through 11.

After School Activities will be cancelled on Tuesday, October 23 for the Kiga/ES students and on Wednesday, October 24 for the MS/HS Students.

Further information and sign up forms for the Parent-Teacher Conferences are attached to this newsletter.  Please complete and return one form per child by Monday, October 1st.

School Pictures: Individual and class pictures will be taken on Tuesday, October 16 (Whole School Photo, sibling portraits and Middle and High School class pictures and portraits) and Wednesday October 17 (Kindergarten and Elementary School students’ class pictures and portraits), by D.i.g.i.t.@.l Schulfotografie.  Processing time will be approximately two weeks, after which the pictures will be given to the students on a purchase or return option.  If any families would like to have a special sibling sitting for brothers and sisters, please advise Mrs. Potrykus or Mrs. Wiegel by no later than Wednesday October 11th, and we will schedule this as well.  Please be aware that babies can only be included in sibling photos if the parent is also in the photo holding the baby. We also require three parent volunteers to assist with the sibling photos. Please contact Mrs. Potrykus at 09132-797910 if you are able to help out.

The whole school photo will be taken at 9:00 at the Dassler Villa on October 16. As such, Middle & High School students who take the bus will be taken directly to the Dassler Villa. Busses will then go to the Convent Campus to bring the remainder of the students to the Dassler Villa. After the whole school photo, Middle & High School students will then be bussed back to the Convent Campus.

German Unification Day: The FIS will be closed on Wednesday, October 3 for the “Tag der Deutschen Einheit”, when in 1990, the nations of West and East Germany were reunited into one nation. School will resume on Wednesday, October 4th.

Parking at the FIS: Parking around both of our campuses has been a problem for us during the past school years and has at times caused strained relations with our neighbours, particularly at the Dassler Villa. Please note that blocking the sidewalk and street is not acceptable and that the neighbour’s driveways are not open to the public for turning or parking purposes. The field located across from the Dassler Villa is also not a public parking area.  We ask parents to park only in legal parking areas, even if they are a bit farther away from the school, and then walk to the FIS.

Boy Scout Registration:  Friday 5th October will be our kick off day for any new Cub Scouts. We would like to invite newcomers to our pack from 1st to 5th grade to come and join us at the Dassler Villa right after school on this day. This would be an excellent opportunity for the boys to attend a Cub Scouts meeting, participate in the activities if they so please to see if they like it before they register. This meeting will last until roughly 3.15.  Parents may come along for info packets and a brief discussion about Cub Scouts, how it works and how you can help us help the boys. For more information, please call either Kathleen Kostouros at 09133 767 802, Roohee Heyl 09132 746 559 or  Carole Williamson at 09132 745 555. We hope to see you there!

English Book Fair:  There will be an English book fair held in the art room of the Dassler Villa on Monday, October 22.  Please send money with your children on this day if they are interested in purchasing books.  Parents are also welcome to attend!

Volunteer Presenters Needed:  Parents, would you like to share some information about your career with the FIS high school students?  As the students are thinking more and more about what they will be doing after high school, we would like to bring in speakers to talk about what they do in the world of work.  If you are interested and are available to attend our Career Morning on Friday 7 December and speak about your career, the training required, how you got your job, and what your day-to-day responsibilities and life are like on the job, please contact Michelle Ang at ang@the-fis.de. Any other parties interested in speaking are also very welcome!

Request for Participants in a University of Erlangen Study:  A study is currently being conducted at the University of Erlangen concerning families' reintegration into their home country after having lived and worked abroad. The department running the study is asking for families who have experienced moving away from their home country, and who speak German, to fill out an anonymous survey. These surveys can be found in the offices at both the Dassler Villa and Convent Campuses, in a blue upright magazine holder. Completed surveys can be returned to the same place. Your participation is much appreciated!

Dogsitter needed:  Is anyone interested in looking after a 1.5yr old English Bulldog for 3 or 4 days during Fall Break? He is very good with kids and other dogs. Please contact Tara Allen or Adrian Haug at the FIS if you are interested. Thank you!
