From our Director, Mr. Fred Runkel:

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this past week, a great majority of our parents and students attended conferences with our classroom and subject teachers. From all reports, they were once again successful, with much information coming from both parents and teachers, which will only benefit the children in the last part of our school year. These conferences are a part of the building blocks which we use to further the education of the children here at FIS.  We, the FIS team, would like to thank all the parents who attended, and urge all parents to contact teachers and set up an appointment at any time when this is necessary.

Alcohol Abuse Awareness in the Middle and High School:  A guest speaker came to the FIS to talk with the Middle and High School students during assemblies this past Monday. Allan, a recovered alcoholic, told the students about his own experiences with alcohol abuse, and eventual addiction, and how this adversely affected him and his family for many years. He answered the students’ questions about the dangers of alcohol abuse, and gave insight into many of the related issues. The students will follow up on the assemblies and have the opportunity to voice their thoughts and questions on the matter through related discussions during Ethics and other classes over the next week.

Music Concert: Mark your calendars! The FIS Middle and High School Music Students will be holding a spring concert on Thursday, May 29th at the Convent Campus. All Music students from Grades 5 through 9 will be performing and are required to attend. The concert will take place at 16:00, and will last approximately one hour.  Weather permitting, the concert will take place outdoors on the terrace at the Convent Campus, Weather not permitting, the concert will be postponed. Please note that there will be no bus transportation service home after the concert and therefore ALL participating students need to be picked up from the Convent Campus following the performance at approximately 17:00.  If your child normally rides the bus home and you are unable to be in attendance or unable to arrange a ride home for him/her, please contact the school as soon as possible.

Missing!  One trumpet, serial number 03-03-4169, is missing from the Convent Campus.  If you have a trumpet at home, please double check the serial number to ensure that it is your trumpet.  The serial number is found on the body of the trumpet near the mouthpiece.  If you locate the missing trumpet, please inform Mr. Thorpe immediately.

Garden Party:  Would you like to have your face painted or to buy some English books and lots, lots more? Then come and enjoy an afternoon of fun with the whole family this Sunday 20th April from 2-4pm. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the FIS are hosting a Garden Party in the grounds of the Convent Campus. There will be something for everyone. Come and enjoy a cup of coffee with a slice of homemade cake or see if you can work out where the treasure is buried. Please come and support us!

6 Things Parents Can Do to Help Prevent Eating Disorders

During Ethics class at the FIS, students learn about how and why the media influences our thoughts and expectations about the way we look. Parents can support this learning through expressing their personal attitudes and opinions about body image, keeping in mind that children often learn more from what we do as opposed to what we say. The following material has been adapted from an article by Dr. Michael Levine, an expert in the area of eating disorders.

  1. Consider your thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors toward your own body and the way that these beliefs have been shaped. Then educate your children about the genetic basis for the natural diversity of human body shapes and sizes. In doing so, make an effort to maintain positive, healthy attitudes and behaviors. Children learn from the things you say and do!
  2. Learn about and discuss with your sons and daughters (a) the value of moderate exercise for health, and (b) the importance of eating a variety of foods in well-balanced meals consumed at least three times a day. Be a good role model in regard to sensible eating, exercise, and self-acceptance.
  3. Make a commitment to exercise for the joy of feeling your body move and grow stronger, not to purge fat from your body or to compensate for calories eaten.
  4. Help children appreciate and resist the ways in which television, magazines, and other media distort the true diversity of human body types.
  5. Encourage your children to be active and to enjoy what their bodies can do and feel like. Do not limit their caloric intake unless a physician requests that you do this because of a medical problem.
  6. Do whatever you can to promote the self-esteem and self-respect of all of your children in intellectual, athletic, and social endeavors. Give boys and girls the same opportunities and encouragement. Be careful not to suggest that females are less important than males, e.g., by exempting males from housework or childcare. A well-rounded sense of self and solid self-esteem are perhaps the best antidotes to dieting and disordered eating.
