From our Middle School Principal, Peter Thorpe:

A new program called “Caught Being Good!” has begun in the Middle School!  Here’s how it will work.  Each staff member at the FIS Convent Campus (teachers and support staff) will receive 10 “Caught Being Good!!” cards each week.   Staff members will give Middle School students a card when they have been “caught being good”.  The cards can be given out at any time - during class, in the hallway, at lunch, outside during recess…whenever and wherever!

Some positive behaviors that would be worthy of receiving a card could include:

·       Making positive comments about another student

·       Demonstrating a positive attitude toward learning

·       Making good use of their time and/or materials

·       Being prepared for class

·       Showing cultural sensitivity

·       Helping another classmate or teacher

·       Demonstrating care and attention to school materials

·       Showing initiative

·       Team building or collaboration with classmates

·       General good citizenship

·       Respect for learning, property and others!

The student can then use these cards in one of two ways.

  • Students can put their “Caught Being Good!” cards into a raffle bowl any day during their lunch time. On Friday of each week there will be a draw for various prizes (for example: ice cream coupons, Atlantis passes, other small gadgets yet to be determined). There will be at least one prize given away per grade per week.

OR

  • Students may choose to save up their “Caught Being Good!” cards and use them as admission to a monthly lunch time pizza party. It will cost 5 “Caught Being Good!” cards to attend the pizza party.

Also, toward the end of the year, the class that has accumulated the most cards per student will receive a class swimming party at Atlantis. There will be a bulletin board display to promote the program and track the tally of cards per class.  We look forward to “catching” as many students as possible!

Welcome:  To Josephine (Grade 1a) and Boris (Grade 2w) Hullin and Sophie Reid (Grade 2w) who joined us on Monday.  We wish these students and their families a warm welcome to the FIS!

Early Dismissal:  As Friday March 14 is the last day prior to the spring vacation, the FIS will dismiss early on this day with the Elementary School and Kindergarten dismissing at 12:00 and the Middle/High School dismissing at 12:10.

Spring Break:  The FIS will be closed for our Spring Break from March 17-28.  School will resume on Monday, March 31.

Elementary School Parents:  When picking up your child at the end of the school day, please wait for them outside of the school building. Lately the foyer has become overcrowded with parents waiting to pick up their children, which makes it difficult for us to properly organize the students who ride the bus.  Please also be sure to leave room outside of the school building for those students who use the bus service to be walked to their busses.

Parent Teacher Conferences:  Mark your calendars! The third quarter Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday, April 15 for the Middle and High School, and Wednesday, April 16 for the Kindergarten and Elementary School.  Further information regarding the conferences and the sign up forms were emailed home with the newsletter last week.  If you have not already done so, please complete the appropriate form and return it to the school office as soon as possible.

The Middle/High School conferences will take place between 8:30 – 17:00 on Tuesday, April 15 at the Vereinshaus in Herzogenaurach located at Hintere Gasse 22.  There will be no classes for the Middle & High School students on this day but it is mandatory that all students in Grades Five through 11 attend the conferences with their parents.  The Kindergarten and Elementary School conferences will take place between 8:30 – 17:00 on Wednesday, April 16 at the Dassler Villa.  There will be no classes for the Kindergarten & Elementary School students on this day. It is strongly recommended that students in Grades Two through Four attend the conferences with their parents.

Due to the conferences, After School Activities will be cancelled at the Dassler Villa on Wednesday, April 16.

International Food Fair: The middle school student’s council is organizing an international food fair at the convent campus on Friday, March 14 2008 during the break time (10:10 – 10:25). The purpose of the fair is to provide international snacks for the students for a low price. We are currently seeking parent volunteers who would be willing to make small, bite sized snacks that are typical to their country of origin. The items will be sold for a price of 0.50€ to 1.00€. Proceeds will go to the middle school students council to help them organize further activities. Interested parents should contact Bryan Landmann (bryan.landmann@the-fis.de)

Shoeboxes for the Children in Romania: The middle school is collecting small items and accessories to fill shoeboxes that will be sent to the children’s shelter in Romania with the grade 11 class in June. The purpose of the action is to donate items that the children have little or no access to. The homeroom that fills the largest number of shoeboxes per student will win a prize.

Re-registration Forms: Many of the re-registration / withdrawal forms for the upcoming school year are still outstanding.  If you have not already returned a re-registration / withdrawal form, please do so immediately.  Please contact Carrie Quinn-Thorpe at carrie.quinn-thorpe@the-fis.de if you require one of these forms.  Please note that the registration fee should not be paid at this time. This will be added the tuition bill for the school year 2008/2009 which will be mailed in late-June.

Reading Strategy Workshop for Parents:  Thank you to the parents who attended the reading strategies workshop on Monday.  As many parents were interested in but not able to attend the workshop, we have attached an overview of the presentation with this newsletter.  If you would like further information regarding this, please contact Miss Dufresne at darcy.dufresne@the-fis.de.

Pre-order your 2007-2008 Yearbooks!!  The 2007-2008 Yearbooks will be sold by PRE-ORDER ONLY.  If you would like a copy of the FIS 2007-2008 yearbook please complete the form below and return it with 20€ to the school office by no later than May 9, 2008.  The yearbooks will be shipped to you should you move before they are published.  Please note that only orders with payment enclosed will be accepted.  Thank you!

Student Cell Phone and Portable Video Game Use During School Day:  FIS students who are allowed by their parents to bring a cell phone or portable video game to school should note that these must be either stored in their lockers (MS/HS) or in their book bags and should be switched off during the school day.  Active cell phones and portable video games are not allowed in the classroom and will be confiscated by the class teacher.   Active cell phones and portable video games are also not allowed on the school playground.  Parents who need to leave a message for their children should do so via the school office.

Time Change:  Don’t forget that we will change our clocks AHEAD one hour at 02:00 on Sunday, March 30th.
