Year 10

Newsletter 21

February 22, 2008

From our Middle School Principal, Peter Thorpe:

The school year is half over and the second semester has begun.  In this newsletter I would like to address ways in which our Middle and High School students can better understand their role in the learning process.  Hopefully you have had time to go through your child’s report card with him/her and carefully look at not only the grades, but the comments that the teachers have written as well.  These comments provide much insight into the strengths of your child and the areas in which they can improve.  It is important at this point for each child (together with their parents and teachers) to set goals for themselves for the second semester and have a plan in place to achieve these goals.

In previous school and classroom newsletters there have been helpful tips about study habits and techniques.  Each student in the Middle School also has a Study class once every two weeks.  I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate a few of these study techniques as the students work towards achieving their goals in the second semester.

  • Keep a tidy work space.  Having too much clutter around your desk (at home or at school) can be very distracting.  Only have the materials you need for the subject you are working on.
  • Make sure your work area is well lit and not too warm.
  • Have a regular routine for doing homework - always the same time and same place.
  • Make homework a priority – get it done before watching TV, going out to play, etc.
  • Keep track of assignments and tests in a homework diary.
  • Put all handouts into a folder for that subject – loose sheets get lost!

Another question that students should be asking themselves is: Who is responsible for my learning?  Research has shown that academic outcomes are not only tied to the effort a student puts into their work but also the degree to which they are involved in their studies (Davis, T.M. and Murrell, P.H., 1994). This infers it is essential that each student becomes involved in his or her own learning.

What does it mean for a student to take responsibility for his or her own learning?  The teacher is there to provide instruction and guidance, to make sure the students are on the right track and to answer questions. However, the student is responsible for answering the critical questions in a course. The questions can come from a lecture or text material. When leaving a class, one of the questions a student should ask is: What is the most important thing I learned? What is something I can now use and that I did not know before? (Armstrong, 1998). Another critical question to ask is: How does this material relate to previous classes or lectures? If the student is unable to answer these questions, then it is the student’s responsibility to find the answers.

Welcome:  To Banruo Cheng who joined us from China in Grade 1d on Monday.  We wish her and her family a warm welcome to the FIS!

After School Activity Program: The second session of our ever popular After School Activity Program (A.S.A.P.) will begin on Monday, March 3rd.  A list of offerings was sent home with the newsletter last week and should by now be completed and returned to the school office.

The A.S.A.P. will run from 3:30 until 4:30 on each respective day (3:40 until 4:40 in the Middle/High School) and parents should be aware that students who take part in the After School Activity Program need to be picked up from school at 4:30 pm (4:40 at the CC).

Re-registration Forms: The re-registration and withdrawal forms for the next school year 2008//2009 were sent home with the newsletter last week.  If you have not already done so, please complete the appropriate form (one per family) and return it to school as soon as possible. These are attached once again with this newsletter.  Parents should note that the registration fee must not be paid at this time. This will be added the tuition bill for the school year 2008/2009 which will be mailed in late-June.

Baker Book Order: The Baker Book order forms have arrived and were distributed to the students today. If you would like to order books, please return the order forms, including money, in an envelope labelled “Book Order” to the school office by no later than Friday, February, 29.

Please Note:  1 pound = 2 EUR.  Please disregard the Euro price in the catalogue as the school must pay shipping.

Reading Strategy Workshop for Parents:  You are invited to attend a workshop where you can learn how to help your child use effective strategies to become a better reader. Miss Dufresne and Mrs. Allen, the Grade One teaching team, will demonstrate these techniques and have you learn and practice the techniques with a partner. This workshop is geared toward elementary students and their families and will be held in the Music Room of the ES on Monday March 3 from 2:15 – 3:15 p.m. If you are interested in attending, or have any questions, please e-mail Miss Dufresne at darcy.dufresne@the-fis.de. We hope to see you there!

Thank You!  To the Fackelmann family for their kind donation of kitchen equipment. This will greatly assist the teachers and students in their cooking activities.

Pre-order your 2007-2008 Yearbooks!!  The 2007-2008 Yearbooks will be sold by PRE-ORDER ONLY.  If you would like a copy of the FIS 2007-2008 yearbook please complete the form below and return it with 20€ to the school office by no later than May 9, 2008  The yearbooks will be shipped to you should you move before they are published.  Please note that only orders with payment enclosed will be accepted.  Thank you!

Roller Shoes:  Please be advised that due to safety concerns, students are not permitted to use roller shoes on either FIS school campus.  Students who wear roller shoes to school must either change their shoes upon arrival or remove the wheels and replace them with the plastic plugs that come with the roller shoes.  This will help us to avoid any accidents in our hallways and on the playground.

Dassler Villa Parents:  When picking up your child at the end of the school day, please leave room for those students who use the bus service to be walked out.  Please also be aware that once students are dismissed from the school building at the end of the day they are dismissed into your care and should be watched over accordingly.

Sick Students: To avoid contagious illnesses from being spread throughout the school, we kindly ask that if your child is showing symptoms of being ill (i.e. coughing, sneezing, vomiting, etc.) that you do not send them to school.  In this way we can reduce the amount of viruses which the students are subjected to, and in effect keep all the students healthier during the course of the winter season.

Hamsters for free: The Forsberg family still has two hamsters to give away FREE to a good home.  We went away on Christmas holiday to come home to find that our two "boy" hamsters had a litter of five!  We have found homes for three of them but still need homes for the remaining two.  They are two female Russian Dwarf hamsters, about 10 weeks in age, grey in color with white bellies and a black stripe down their back.  They are very cute and very good with kids! If you are interested or have any questions please contact us at 09135 736826 or 0172 852 9234; email: j.forsberg@t-online.de
