Year Ten

Newsletter 18

January 18, 2008

From our Director, Mr. Fred Runkel:

As the first semester of our school year is soon to end, the teachers will be writing reports. The purpose of the reports is to communicate to the parents on specific areas of growth for each child in each subject, as well as to enable children and parents to set their own goals such as addressing areas of weakness, for the coming semester.

Our reporting system is computerized. All reports will be written next week, and proofed, printed and collated during the week of Jan. 28. The report cards will be distributed to the students on Friday, February 1st.

Our reporting format is in line with current educational research findings which stress that students should view their progress in a positive light, and then along with their parents, set goals for the upcoming semester.   We welcome parents’ comments regarding our reporting system.

Early Dismissal January 24 and No School January 25: Students will be dismissed from the Dassler Villa at 12:00 and from the Convent Campus at 12:10 on Thursday, January 24. This afternoon will be used by the teachers for report card preparation. The FIS will be closed on Friday, January 25 for the PTO Ski Weekend and to allow for teachers’ meetings in the morning and report card preparation in the afternoon. There will therefore be no newsletter on Friday, January 25th.

Found:  A Sony Eriksson cell phone was found in the Kindergarten area at the Dassler Villa yesterday, January 17.  If this belongs to you, please see Susanne Potrykus in the DV office.

Fasching in the Elementary School:  On Friday 1st February all Kindergarten and Elementary school students are invited to wear a Fasching costume to school. For those of you new to Germany, Fasching is the traditional “Carnival” time of year before the Easter period.  We will have a short assembly in the morning to greet the students and the PTO will run a Fasching “Dance- party” for each of the classes. Dismissal on this day will be at the regular time of 13:25. We look forward to seeing the students in their colourful costumes on that day!

Rosenmontag & Faschingsdienstag:  The FIS will be closed for the Fasching holiday on Monday, February 4th (Rosenmontag ) and Tuesday, February 5th (Faschingsdienstag).  School will resume on Wednesday, February 6th.

FIS Calendar for 2008-2009: The new FIS school calendar for the 2008/2009 school year is attached to this newsletter.  The calendar will also be found on the FIS web site at http://fis.ecis.org.

Goodbye:  As there will be no newsletter next week Friday, we would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to Ana Ribeiro in Grade 3t.  Ana’s last day will be Friday, January 25 as she and her family are moving to the USA.  We wish them all the best in the future!

If your child will be absent from school: Please inform the respective school office first thing in the morning.  If it is a planned absence please send written notification to the school office at least 24 hours in advance.  It is imperative that the school office is always informed of any students that are absent.  If your child rides the FIS bus service you must also contact the bus company directly at 09193-3366 to inform them that your child does not require pick up on that day.

Telephone Tree: As late winter / early spring weather is often unpredictable, unexpected school closures can occur.  Our telephone tree is designed to pass on an emergency message to the whole school community in a short amount of time.  In order to ensure that the telephone tree functions properly, all families should always make certain that the school has, and that the telephone tree contains, numbers which are working and at which families can be reached either late in the evening or very early in the morning.   A current version of our telephone tree is attached to this newsletter.  Please discard any old versions you may have.  Please double check that the contact numbers listed are correct.  Please contact Carrie Quinn-Thorpe at the carrie.quinn-thorpe@the-fis.de or via the Convent Campus at 09132-730230 with any changes.  Please be aware that families are listed by the oldest child in the school.

Should the telephone tree need to be activated, when your family receives a call, please continue the chain by calling the next family (follow the arrow).  If you are unable to contact the next family, please skip to the next family on the tree and try the original family again afterwards.  If you are unable to reach a family after several attempts, please advise Fred Runkel or Carrie Quinn-Thorpe. In this way we can ensure that all families receive vital information regarding weather related closures quickly.

Nutritious Eating at School:  Good nutrition is the stepping stone to good health, to a sustained energy level throughout the day, and even to increased learning, so say the findings in numerous journals in the medical profession.

To concentrate these findings into a nutshell for parents of our students can be a difficult task.  However some of the items which are important for our students can surely be noted here. These items will pertain to nutrition as it affects children during their school day.

Firstly, a child’s day should start with a nutritious breakfast.  Breads, fruits and milk can all be a part of that breakfast in a form consistent with what is eaten in your country or here. The most important item is that children eat something which is nutritious for breakfast. A nutritious breakfast will disperse energy at a constant level throughout a child’s morning, giving the child a continuous intake of energy to help him/her focus in each of their classes.

In our schedule at the FIS, the children have one break during the morning followed by a lunch that starts for some classes as late as 1:00 pm.  Students should have snack foods for break time that are nutritious and healthy.  Examples are fruits or granola bars. Pastries bought in the local bakery on the way to school, or candy and junk foods are not as healthy and should not be brought to school. These foods have a less desirable affect on children. They give an almost instantaneous energy boost, but the effect is not long lasting and sluggishness can result sometime after the initial sugars have been used up. In addition, these foods are not nutritious as they are sorely lacking in vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. Children can tend to feel tired as the morning goes on, thereby losing focus in their classes.

Parents should also to talk to their children about their lunch, asking questions especially about quantity. The child that does not have breakfast, and then eats his brought from home lunch at 10:00 will struggle with attention span as the day goes on. Making sure that the right foods in the necessary quantities are available will also help toward better learning.

Eating nutritious foods at the right time is one sure way to ensure that your child has the energy level to successfully complete a school day.
